Interestingly, women tended to have slightly higher concentrations of the nutrient than men.

The team found an especially strong correlation between higher alpha-carotene levels and lower risk of death from diabetes, upper respiratory tract and upper digestive tract cancers, as well as lower respiratory disease.

The researchers cautioned that the levels of alpha-carotene, rather than having a direct affect on disease prevention themselves might instead "act as an indicator of multiple interactive forces."

"These findings support increasing fruit and vegetable consumption as a means of preventing premature death," the researchers noted.
See more at http://www.scientificamerican.com/blog/post.cfm?id=alpha-carotene-from-veggies-linked-2010-12-30

Time for Christmas

<img style="float:left; The battle concluded after play stretched over three days.
The 6ft 9in Isner won 3 sets to 2, with the last set being won with after a staggering total of 70 games to 68.
The end came as Mahut approached the net and Isner made a passing shot. Its counterpart, in the Forbidden City at Beijing, differs from it only in minor details.
The outer brass rings can be used for telling the time in both Western and Chinese cultures. The inner brass ring marks the seasons. Each day this ring - together with the main dial - turns clockwise through one degree, thus making a full revolution in a year.
On the main face of the clock is a chart showing the brighter stars visible from Southern China. On the chart, the most prominent feature is the Milky Way (Tianhe ? the "Celestial River") but in all around 850 stars are represented by small red circles. These stars are joined into about 160 groups, representing the most significant of the traditional Chinese constellations.
The movement is Chinese, but it is based on an English design of around AD 1790. Parts of the movement, such as the short pendulum are unusual, suggesting that the maker was not copying a movement but working from sketches or notes and improvised where they were inadequate.

Designs in Stainless Clock

<img style="float:left; At one end of a massive wrought iron gantry sits a large frog, at the other, a forge making golden balls of sunshine. The balls are placed onto a pendulum fixed to a wheel. Every three minutes the wheel moves along the gantry delivering the balls of energy to the frog. A hammer smacks the ball into the clock housing, and it emerges, cascading down an escapement before returning back into the clock. Musical sequences (of questionable taste - I wonder if something could be negotiated with Paul McCartney) are heard in the background and on the hour, the frog’s eyes light up and he blows bubbles onto the crowd below, as a lily-pad spreads out behind him. Youtube hosts a few videos.
